My Review:-I decided to listen to this book with my grandchildren. There is everything you need in this audio that you don't need to see the pictures to go with it. We tried to guess who was stealing Christmas after Santa had just finished delivering them all. The way Olivia read the book made it easy to picture what was happening. Having the story as an audiobook, is a great idea for children to listen to on their own, especially at bedtime. I story for children of all ages, even the grown-ups. We all enjoyed the story, that we are now reading the book. We will also be leaving a review for that as well.

Vegan Recipes for New Age Men

Vegan Recipes for New Age Men
By Liz Treacher
Genre:-Rom-com
Blurb:-Lauren really, really needs a break.
There's just one problem: a bearded bohemian is squatting in her Highland cottage by the sea. He's performing reiki on her plants and cluttering the fridge with strange ingredients. What on earth is aquafaba, anyway?
When her busybody granny turns up to crash her much-needed holiday, along with Lauren's boyfriend Patrick-who really is perfect for her, by the way-things get even worse.
As her life unravels, Lauren is forced to confront the ghost lurking in her idyllic Scottish retreat. But with a skilled hand in the kitchen and a heartfelt recipe or two, she might discover that maybe-just maybe-chickpeas aren't so bad after all.

My Review:-We begin in 2015. Lauren works for a publishing company in London, she enjoys and is very good at proofreading. Lauren's granny has raised her and done a good job. Lauren now lives on her own, but sees her granny weekly. Lauren has been with her boyfriend Patrick for three years. Lauren decides she needs time away on her own, and heads to her cottage near to Loch Fleet, her cottage was left to her. There was one problem when she arrives at the cottage, Nash. Nash had been renting the cottage and should of moved out a week ago, but he had, had an accident and can't go anyway. But that's not the only problem Lauren has to face, let's just say there's more than Nash for Lauren to cope with. The character all fitted nicely into the story. I found the descriptions of the Loch and the cottage, made you feel as if you were there.

A Divided Duty Q & A

A Divided Duty Q & A

Q10:-"the past matters, however painful, however imperfect." How does this statement make you feel about your own life?

A:-I like this statement, I've been through some really painful things, and at the time I just wanted to shut it out, I never thought I would be strong enough to get through the past 10 years but I was. I had things happen many years before that, which I thought was hard but when things became more painful than I could possibly imagine, I found the strength to do it. These things are what has made me who I am today.

I would like to think I would have the willpower, but until you are in that situation you could never know.

The Road Home

The Road Home
By Nigel Stewart
Genre:-
Blurb:-Joe Thompson is a success. Great job, own house, car, money. He's got it all-or he thinks he has until one day, his boss suddenly decides he needs some time off and tells him to take a break, with immediate effect, which leads Joe to get in the car and drive somewhere, anywhere. Eventually, he arrives in Ripon, and the cathedral. Imbibing the atmosphere and the history, Joe's road trip leads him onto several more cathedrals. Is it a pilgrimage? Is he looking for something he can't find except in the sanctity of a cathedral? Or is what he is looking for much more simple. A chance encounter with Louise gives himwhat was really missing in his life-love on equal terms, until he learns Louise's love comes with complexities, something Joe does not know if he can cope with.
What happens to someone when they get lost? When their past and present don't add up to their future? Is what Joe has got worth giving up for what he really wants and will he only find it on the road home?
Nigel Stewart's novel takes Joe not only on a physical journey but an emotional one, too, where he is able to discover the complexities of his own personality and why he has become who he is and how he can become who he really wants to be. The book explores the effects of modern day life when you think you have it all and you actually have nothing.

Q8:-What would you do for a young child in this situation?

A:-All I can think of is how terrifying and frighten these children most feel, It doesn't matter what age they are it's something that they will live with for the rest of their life.
If I was in this situation, I would take the child and take and do anything to hide what was happening, reassuring them as much as I could, keeping them close to me

The Hytharo Redux

Release Day
The Hytharo Redux
By Jonathan Weiss
Genre:-High Fantasy
Blurb:-Lost among the dune-swept ruins of ancient glass towers, 14-year-old Spiric hunts for his stolen memories. Guided by the exiled scholar that found him, he embarks on a perilous journey across the Droughtlands to uncover his origins.
He's told his red eyes mark him as a Hytharo, one of the long-extinct storm callers that sealed all water into the air itself before they were erased from history. In the thousand years since, thirst has been quenched simply by breathing, but that hasn't stopped the surviving runic peoples from wanting water any less.
For without it, there's no ink, no runes, no magic, and in the vast desert wastes of the Droughtlands, magic means power.
To Spiric, the mantra is eerily familiar.
Word of his presence ripples across the Droughtlands and pressure mounts on him to reverse the Hytharo's final, sacrificial act. it's only as his memories begin to return that he realises the true reason his people were wiped out.
With the fragments of Spiric's memories growing bloodier and more desperate, he must determine whether carrying out his supposed fate will cause history to repeat, or if he can forge a new destiny, both for himself and the Droughtlands.

My Review:-This is the last book in 'A Dolly Series' and I've had the pleasure to read and review all 7 books. As always we have Wendy Helmann, Executive Secretary to Sir Robert Kingsley. The book begins with Wendy coming home after a lunch meeting with Johnson Johnson, and her mother shouting "Bifocal Spectacles!" complaining about her daughter going out with Johnson, even thou it was about a comission for a painter of the Chairman in oil, Sir Robert Kingsley. We have a bomb while Johnson and Sir Robert are talking. We visit Marrakesh with Wendy and her mother, and meet many characters past and present along the way. I did find part a bit confusing, but I also thought Wendy did also. I did enjoy the book, but not as good as the other books in 'A Dolly Series'.

Mr Hammond and the Poetic Apprentice

Mr Hammond and the Poetic Apprentice
By Mellany Ambrose
Genre:-Historical Biographical Fiction
Pages:-360
Blurb:-Compelling historical fiction featuring the poet John Keats as a main character. Fictionalised account of the little-known time in Keats's life when he was being trained to be an apothecary and surgeon by Thomas Hammond. Author worked as an NHS GP close to where Keats trained as an apprentice.
Summer, 1814, Thomas Hammond is an apothecary surgeon in a village near London whose dreams of a grand medical career were ruined by a shameful secret. He longs to see his apprentice, his son Edward, become a great surgeon. His other apprentice is eighteen-year-old local orphan, John Keats. Thomas sees John as a daydreamer who wastes time reading. John asks Thomas how he copes with his patients' suffering, but Thomas has no real answer. After all, Georgian medicine is brutal with no anaesthesia, antisepsis or antibiotics. Leeches are used to bleed and medicines can poison rather than cure.
Thomas failed to save John's mother four years earlier, and when John criticises Thomas's methods tempers flare on both sides. Despite their differences, Thomas and John begin to develop a grudging respect for each other with Thomas seeing a humanity in the way John relates to patients. Their relationship deepens into one more resembling father and son while Thomas's true son, Edward, disappoints his father. Thomas realises John is gifted and would make a skilled surgeon, but to help John succeed Thomas must confront his own past mistakes.
On the verge of qualifying as a surgeon, John unexpectedly abandons medicine for poetry. Thomas is devastated and struggles to find meaning in his life and work. As he faces one final challenge, can the master learn some valuable lessons about life from his poetic apprentice before it's too late?

My Review:-It's the summer of 1814 in Georgian England. Thomas Hammond, an apothecary surgeon, he has two apprentices, his son Edward and an orphan John Keats both totally different from each other. Thomas doesn't know who to promote, Edward or John. Thomas loved his job and his patients but does feel guilty at times as he can't do as much as he would want for them. The story is set at the time when bleeding and leeches are the main medicine and it only took one year studying to become a surgeon. The characters are well thought out. The descriptions of country life and herbal medicine helps you picture just what it was like.  I will be on the look out for Mellany's next book

My Review:-This is Book 6 in 'A Dolly Mystery'. I've had the pleasure of reading and reviewing all 5 other books. In this book we meet Joanna Emerson who has trained as a nursery nurse and now works as a nanny for the Booker-Readmans, looking after their son baby Benedict. The family are very wealthy. In this book we have a train that becomes unhooked from the main train and ends up stranded and left in the freezing temperatures of Canada. Johnson Johnson know Joanna's father as he is a colleague of his. Johnson and his beloved yacht Dolly is never to far away from the action and always there to help with the trouble that is out there. Who and why did someone want Joanna to get this job? There are plenty of red herrings and twists throughout the book which I love.  Now we are coming nearer to the end of 'A Dolly Mystery' I would love to see a bit more about Johnson Johnson and what's behind his bi-focals he wears

Blurb:-Mrs Plansky's Revenge is bestselling author Spencer Quinn's first novel in a new series since the meteoric launch of Chat and Berrie-introducing the irresistible and unforgettable Mrs. Plansky, in a story perfect for book clubs and commercial fiction readers.
Mrs. Loretta Plansky, a widow in her seventies, is settling into retirement in Florida while dealing with her 98-year-old father and fielding requests for money from her beloved children and grandchildren. Thankfully, her new hip hasn't changed her killer tennis game one bit.
One night Mrs. Plansky is startled awake by a phone call from a voice claiming to be her grandson Will, who needs ten thousand dollars to get out of a jam.
By morning, Mrs. Plansky has lost everything. Law enforcement announces that Loretta's life savings have vanished, and that it's hopeless to find the scammers behind the heist. First humiliated, then furious, Loretta Plansky refuses to be just another victim.
In a courageous bid for justice, Mrs. Plansky follows her only clue on a whirlwind adventure to a small village in Romania to get her money and her dignity back-and perhaps find a new lease on life, too.

My Review:-Mrs Loretta Plansky is a senior citizen who's just had a new hip but also has lost all her money through a scam. After the FBI tells her she's not going to get her money back, she decides to do something about it herself. She buys a ticket to Romania as that is the place the FBI told her, her money had went to Alba Gemina, Romania.  In Alba Gemina, Dinu and Romeo his friend are working for Uncle Dragomir a criminal and Dinu's Uncle. Uncle Dragomir is rich, he has a casino, a restaurant, and a hotel, through the money he scams off people. But don't think it's that simple as you will find out in the story
I've never read any of Spencer Quinn's books but after reading this book I'm on the hunt for more books by Spencer.

Blurb:-Charlotte, Violet, and Rose. Three sisters growing up amidst the rumblings of World War One and each of them fighting for their own personal freedom. Charlotte, the eldest and a teacher, engaged to marry Richard, the Curate, and struggling to accept her passionate nature and sexuality, embroiled into the world of Conservative activism through the Primrose League. Violet, a nurse, and a suffragette, fighting not just for female emancipation, but also her own as she battles with her feelings for her best friend, Maeve. Rose, the youngest, and diagnosed an epileptic, fights to be recognised as a person in her own right and in the process falls in love with John, of lower class and station.
When Charlotte takes the decision, along with her mother, to institutionalise Rose because of her epilepsy, the family is split as Violet opposes Charlotte's high-handed decision, but is devastated to find she cannot protect Rose, as personal and political boundaries are pushed to the limits and each girl struggles with impending womanhood.
Three Sisters is author Kathryn Barnett's first novel with Provoco Publishing and is a delightful, beautifully written social statement, detailing the battle of three girls to become women in their own right. Will Charlotte's passionate nature and conservatism affect her forthcoming marriage to the Curate? Does Violet find her freedom in her suffragette activities, or will she be entrapped by her nursing duties and family responsibilities? And what of Rose, the youngest, fighting to follow her true self and be accepted despite her epilepsy and not ostracised because of it?
A heart-warming tale of three sisters, fighting for freedom in this, the first of five novels making up the Three Sisters Story

By Shankari Chadran
Genre:-Literary Contemporary Fiction/Family Sagas
Pages:-400
Publisher:-Ultimo Press
Blurb:-Song of the Sun God is about the wisdom, mistakes and sacrifices of our past that enable us to live more freely in the future. Nala and Rajan, a young couple, begin their married life in 1946, on the eve of Ceyton's independence from Britain. Arranged in marriage, they learn to love each other and protect their growing family, against the backdrop of increasing ethnic tension.
As the country descends into bloody civil war, Nala and Rajan must decide which path is best for their family; and live with the consequences of their mistakes.
Over time, Nala and Rajan teach their family why some parts of their history and heritage are worth holding onto; and why some parts and people have to be left behind.
Song of the Sun God spans three continents and three generations of a family that remains dedicated to its homeland, whilst learning to embrace its new home. Funny, warm and tender, we see Nala and Rajan's family navigate war, migration, old loyalties and new beginnings, relying on the philosophy of their religion, their ancestors and each other.

My Review:-This book is about war and family, but don't let the war side put you off, this is a story that will make you stop and think. It's both beautifully wrote and real. We start in Colombo, 1932. I love the beginning of the book 'If you're going to do something, son, you should do it properly'. Rajan has just seen a monk self-immolating, but also receives news that his sister has died. Fast forward to an older Rajan, he is married to Nala through an arrange marriage and this is their family story, especially their daughters, Priya and Dhara, (Nala's cousin Mohan was killed so they adopted her daughter Dhara). When the girls were older, Priya moved to Australia with her new family, but Dhara stayed in Sri Lanka to support the Tamil insurgency.  Chandran shares eighty years and four generations through both good times and bad times, including secrets.

It's not long before she needs the help of Eric Morgan, the man from next door and Dimi. They start to uncover things and sense there's a lot more to this than you think. That's all I'm says. This book was creepy and full of suspense, that I ended up reading it in one sitting. This is my first book by Laurel Hightower, but it won't be my last.

My Review:-I don't know what I was expecting when I decided to review this book, but I'm really glad I did. What does a lone neon hair tie say to you? We visit different POV as we travel along with a lone neon hair tie, seeing  the psychological and emotional side it has with people. Six total strangers, each with their own struggles and different from each other or are they. I did find this a quick read but one I would recommend

My Review:-The book begins with a boy named Luca at the park, he goes to the park because at home his older brother and sister picks on him and his parents are always to busy to spend time with him. The park is his happy place. Going higher on the swing, Luca is a rainbow over the houses and goes to find it. Opening the door Luca is met with Mister Mishkins a cat, but not just any cat a magical cat. They start talking when the bell above the door rings and in rushes Gemma, 'Thunder' that was why Gemma had rushed in she didn't like thunder. Gemma get's to meet Jasper, another cat, who takes her on a journey. I'm not saying anymore as it's for you to discover where Jasper takes Gemma and why. Each chapter has a different part of the book, but all linked together through Mister Mishkins. This is a beautiful story for both children young and old, along with illustrations help tell the story, especially with younger children. I shared this book with my grandchildren and we all loved it. The story takes the bad things away and replaces it with happiness, joy and hope, along with a little bit of magic.

Strange messages, withheld calls and shadows on the windows spike temporary attacks of stress-related blindness as she clings to her last chance to live her dream.
But as the dark play she's directing starts to unravel the secrets she's sworn never to tell, Jenny realises she's not at the pub by chance... and soon she finds herself the leading lady in a nightmare replay of her past

My Review:-Jenny Watson takes on the job she's always dreamt off, bringing an old pub back to life. What better than a tutor pub for a Shakespearean Festival. Auditions are set up, but nothing is going to be as easy as she first thought. Trying to convince a small place that Shakespearean play will be fun and bring everyone together. But it's not just the people that she's finding hard, she's also got a feeling that someone is watching her every move and what's with the skull in the cellar. Nothing is what it seems as Jenny so finds out. I did find it a bit slow at the beginning but I still enjoyed reading this story. There are Shakespeare quotes at the beginning of each chapter, some I remember from school.

My Review:-This book is set during the covid pandemic, which made it more real as we've all been through it. Claire and Marcus are the complete opposite of each other, they meet through Gavin, Clair's social worker and Marcus's neighbour. You will see how not knowing each other, they becoming friends. You will also meet other characters throughout the book along with the struggles they have. It's a lovely story of friendships and how people come together when times get hard. Everyone is feeling what is happening all around them, and begin to understand others.
I found this book an easy read, even though you might be put of because of the size, give it a read, you'll be surprised just how much you'll enjoy it
