Love In War

Love In War
By Michael Farthing
Genre:-Literary Fiction/Historical/Romance
Pages:-464
Publisher:-Affable Media
Blurb:-Love in War is a love story of its time. Joanna and Johnnie were born in South London in the shadow of the Great War and were still growing up when the narrative begins in 1936 during Hitler's rise in Nazi Germany. It ends ten years later in 1946, when Johnnie is demobilised.
Despite the committed intensity of the five -year relationship, they spent only forty-nine days together. Thus, Love in War is more about managing life apart than being together. The story moves between London and Berlin (where Joanna visits in 1938 and her dear schoolfriend,  Ursula lives out the war) and the horrific theatres of war in North Africa and Southern Italy, which have disastrous effects on Johnnie and render him almost unrecognisable on his return to England after the war.
As the story closes, it is evident that there are no winners, just losers. Perhaps it is love that emerges as the only victor. The future is uncertain for all concerned. They have almost nothing to show for the last five years; just time lost. There remains a rather modest ray of hope-as Johnnie says at the end, 'but we are alive.'

My Review:-This is a lovely love story of Johnnie and Joanna. Johnnie had watched Joanna, knowing if it wasn't her it'll be someone like her, but it was her. Church brought them together, he would watch her from where she sat with her family as he sat at the other end. Johnnie was five years old than Joanna. They started as friends and ended as a married couple, but it wasn't as easy as that, war broke out and Johnnie was enlisted. The love grow through letters that started when they were young, whenever either was away from each other they would write and this carried on through the war. the author has also added pages from Johnnie's notebook and Joanna's journal, which was I love touch but also told you how they feel with war going on around then. There is so much more to this story you have to read it.

My Review:-Catharsis is Book One in 'Landscapes of Love.' We have three main characters, Charlotte (Charlie), Daniel and Anne-Marie. Charlie lives on the large family estate in the Yorkshire Dales and a landscape photographer. While taking photos in the Yorkshire Dales, Charlie comes across Daniel.
Daniel is a conservationist and mercenary, who will do anything to stop poachers and wealthy businessmen killing white rhinos in Kenya and mountain gorillas in Rwanda. Daniel helps Charlie out when she is attacked in another country, and their start a passionate love affair.
Anne-Marie is Afro-America who helps Daniel with his work and knows how dangerous it is. Anne-Marie will do anything to keep the people closest to her safe. These three characters travel from one place to another to safe the animals that are in danger. I love the writing style of Philip,  he has took the time to research as much as he could so he could added it to this book and made it realistic.

Enlightenment of Rogue Emperor

Enlightenment of Rogue Emperor (Rogue, Arcane and Desolate; Book 1)
By Jana Klánová
Genre:-fantasy, Action Adventure, Young Adult/New Adult 15+
Blurb:-Eugenie is a certified, double-vetted, regular, ordinary high-school girl living her best life someone more competent planned for her, in a perfectly normal world, where strange things don't happen because that is simply impossible.
 Or so she thought.
Right the second she graduates, the rug under her feet gets pulled and she, alongside a young, mysterious scoundrel, takes a wild tumble down a mountain of myths and hoaxes that her country has been built upon into a whirl of unknown, scary...but oh, so exciting.
Enlightenment of the Rogue Emperor is a lighthearted, fun, action-packed fantasy with a dash of romance and it is intended to entertain young readers above the age of 15. Contains crude language. If some characters from this book asked you to pull their finger, you better not. Reader's discretion is advised.

My Review:-This is Book One of 'Rogue, Arcane and Desolate.' I do like the cover as I think it draws you in. This is a story of fantasy, romance, sea monsters, action packed and is also funny. It's a story for young adults, but even older people that love fantasy will love this. We have to young people, Eugenie and AJ, total opposites, are brought together in this book. Eugenie has the best life ever, but the second she graduates everything changes. AJ is an Emperor. Eugenie and a young mysterious scoundrel, take a wild tumble down a mountain of myths and hoaxes and the story begins. I did find it hard to get into this book, but that's not to say you will have the same problem. I did find I was drawn more to Eugenie than AJ.

Sigrid Rides

Sigrid Rides-The Story of an Extraordinary Friendship (An Adventure on Two Wheels)
By Travis Nelson
Genre:-Non Fiction/Biography/Cycling/Cats
Pages:-272
Publisher:-Radar/Octopus
Blurb:-In the tradition of A Street Cat Named Bob, Nala's World, and Felix the Railway Cat: This is the story of Travis Nelson, his deaf Norwegian Forest cat, Sigrid, and their adventures on two wheels.
When Travis Nelson arrived in London, he expected to embark on a new life and a new job. Coming from California, he'd uprooted his wife and his cat, Sigrid, and planned to be here for the long haul. Then Covid-19 struck. Travis's new job vanished as the company cut staff. For two years, and through successive lockdowns, he was stuck in limbo in am unfamiliar city, trying to find his way.
To keep himself occupied, Travis set out to discover his adoptive home. He bought a bike and began cycling through London's streets and parks with his unusual travelling companion, Sigrid-his deaf, Norwegian Forest cat-who came along for the ride. But what started as a way of injecting routine and purpose into Travis's life in stressful times, created an internet sensation. When Travis began posting videos of the pair's ride on social media, he drew in another community of people looking for moments of joy in an anxious world.
In this charming memoir, Travis charts his adventures with Sigrid. He unlocks a hidden London seen only from cyclist's viewpoint, as well as finding friendship and hope. Most of all, it is the story of one man's relationship with his feline companion-one that has given him direction and a sense of belonging at a time when he felt lost.

My Review:-I just have to say that I fell in love with this book, even before I read the blurb, after all who wouldn't with a little cutie little Sigrid. We get to meet Travis Nelson and his beloved cat Sigrid. Travis had moved from California with his wife and Sigrid, in a hope to start a new life but not everything went to plan. Covid-19 hit the world and everyone around us. That's when we got to meet Travis and Sigrid, Sigrid is not just any cat, Sigrid is a Norwegian Forest cat, but with one thing different to others, Sigrid is deaf (which I found added more cuteness to him). Travis decided to start making videos and posting them on social media. Just a cat and his best friend traveling around London streets and parks on a bike. We go on this journey and see London through the eyes of a cyclist. It showed you the trust Sigrid has in Travis, but also how Sigrid helped Travis during, what was a hard time for everyone. I've been a follower of Travis and Sigrid since coming across then on YouTube. This is a lovely book for everyone.

My Review:-Cecilia Lamb was eighteen-years-old when she married, and three days later she moved to Portugal, leaving her three brothers and sister behind. Portugal, 1754.  John Harding who's dream of being a sea captain, of one of the tall ships one day, finally comes true. John goes on his first voyage leaving behind his young wife, Cecilia. Cecilia looked out at the water, being at the top of the hill, Cecilia could see the same view through any of the five windows. Cecilia is lonely and worried that her husband, John might not want to come back home to her. John has been gone longer than he should of been and nothing had been heard. People presumed John must be dead, but Cecilia knows different, Everyday Cecilia would walk down the hill to the water and look out at sea, just looking for a sign. She has a feeling and visions  that he will come home one day, but when? Something dark is drawing Cecilia to the sea, but what, all she knows is it's nothing good. I love the description that the author has used throughout the book, I feel you get to know more about where you are.

My Review:-The Singing Dentist, Dr Milad Shadrooh is guaranteed to make your smile better, and all I can say is 'Yes' he does.  I don't know why I picked to review this book as I have a dentist phobia, maybe I thought it might help me with going to the dentist (I'll tell you at the end of this if it has). I've really enjoyed reading this book. We are told why Dr Milad picked being a dentist and we hear the stories of his time at dentistry school. We are also told about his love of music and rapping.  Dr Milad talks about the NHS v Private, the cost and how Covid hit dentistry. I said I would let you know if it would help with the dentist...no it didn't but I would still recommend it as a good read.

My Review:-This is a book that I wanted to read. Myles is Lilly's assistance dog. Lilly is autistic and Myles helps her in everyday life, keeping her safe and calm. Why Myles and Lilly's grandma have a nap, Lilly explores her grandma's house. What has she found...CLICK, CLICK, the hand torch clicks on and off. On the beach, some children stop and stroke Myles, and Lilly goes into a dark cave on her own, click went the torch. Myles notices Lilly has gone into the cave and goes after her.

My Review:-After getting laid off at work, Alli gets a message from an old school friend, asking if she would like to go to a house-party. Alli had nothing else to do and after finding out it's at Canonbury Manor, she had to say yes. Canon Manor is the place they say the late Caroline Rand killed herself in the late 60s. As soon as Alli arrives at the Manor, things start to happen, not big, but they keep coming. Could this be Caroline or is it something else?
The story is told in two timelines past (60s) and the present. There are plenty of twists and turns, it will have you captivated. I could feel something was going to happen, but I couldn't help wanting more. I found it a easy read,  along with a chilling greeting: "Welcome to The Columbine, Miss Sinclair. You are expected."

We meet some other characters along the way. If you love dinosaurs, prehistoric creatures and magic, you'll love this book.
I remember one of my girls growing up with her imaginary friend 'Jabar' and he went everywhere with us, we even had to leave a space for him. Even now with children of her own, she still talks about 'Jabar'.

My Review:-It's 1970s in London and we follow the life of Mike, who is 16-years-old. he's the baby (baby Mikey) of the family. Family life has been easy with his mother in remission from cancer. Mike wants to make his own way in life.  His sister Susan is in a band and her boyfriend Bazzer gives Mike guitar lessons. As we read the book we meet family and friends, we learn all about Mike, his relationship, his character, his first hair cut, booze, weed and how he moves through his life. Each character has their own story, and we meet them as the book moves on. Music is a big part of the story which I did like and reading it did bring back things for my life growing up through 70s and 80s. Will Mike get the break he needs?
There is so much in this book, joy, love, sadness, death, humour, happiness and more. Will Mike make it?
I would recommend this to anyone that grow up in 70s and 80s, it will bring back so my memories.

My Review:-This is Book One-The Cavalier and my first by Israh Azizi. Velamir was abandoned at the age of 4-years-old and saved by General Winston. He was sent to Chisman Academy at an early age to learn to fight and become a soldier. Princess Natassa is the daughter of Emperor Malus. She knows her father has gave her hand to someone she doesn't like or love. She has to get away before it's to late. Velamir and Natassa are both strong characters and will fight for what they want. One wants to destroy the Empire and the other is a Princess. The author has weaved these two different story together, that they become one. Both are strong characters MC, even though their stories are different they both want the same and that has shown in the way Israh has wrote the story. We have action, adventure, romance, sword fighting, archery and fantasy all wrapped together to make a great read.

My Review:-I read this book with my granddaughters and we all loved it. I loved the bright colours that are used throughout the book, The girls loved the bit about the brothers having a smelly bedroom, as they said their brother has a smelly room as well. We found the book funny and easy to read. We also made our own story up using just the pictures, which is great for younger children. I did laugh when it said that Dorothy lived in the loft, as we have a fairy that lives in our loft (as I say when anything happens and nobody owns up to it, its the fairy in the loft again). This book would be a great book for most ages, as one of my granddaughters is 9 years old and she loved it.

My Review:-I love how the book starts, with Mrs King lying all her knives out on the table with Mr Shepherd looking on. Mrs King has been let go from being the housekeeper, and she wants revenge, not just for herself but also her mother.  There has been plenty of ex-servants that her worked at the De Vries house that are willing to help Mrs King plot the best heist. They know Miss De Vries is holding a ball, and  Mrs King knows all the details. The heist will be on the night of the ball and it will be right under Miss De Vries nose. There are some strong characters and I did like Mrs Bones. I don't want to say to much and give anything away so it's up to you to read the rest.

My Review:-There was something about the cover that made me want to read it.  Dorian Frost is working in a school. Dorian has been given the job to teach young witches on how to use their power correctly, after all he knows what can happen if you don't, it's something he'll never forget. Dorian, Milo and Finn had been friends from school until Finn's death. Milo is Dorian's on and off boyfriend.  While kissing Milo, Dorian has a vision, Milo's powers and Dorian's powers become one, this is when he sees one of his students Caled, being murdered. Dorian knows its his job to keep Caleb safe, but to what extend will he go to make this happen? I love the writing style and the plot, you can see that the author has brought his working skills into the book, which has made it more real. If you like fantasy, magic, romance with and bit of mystery, well this book is for you.

Salt and Skin

Salt and Skin

Pages:-368
Publisher:-September Publishing
Blurb:-Grief-stricken and on the verge of a breakdown, photographer Luda Managan leaves Australia for a commission, bringing her two teenage children to a remote, weather-ravaged but beautiful Scottish island.
Luda, isolated from her two resentful teenagers, turns her attention to the records from the 17th century island witch hunts and the fragmented life stories of the executed women. Min, her daughter, restless and strong, tries to fill up the space in their family left by her father. She soon finds comfort in both the sea and an unlikely friendship. But the only thing that beautiful and gifted Darcy cares about is getting marks high enough for entry into university-one very, very for away from his mother. Until he meets the wild foundling, Theo, who slowly self-destructing in a community that is both protective and violent towards him. But when a tragic accident unleashes ghosts and the echoes of long-ago violence and betrayal into their lives, the Managans must confront their unspoken histories in order to survive.
Luminously-written, Salt and Skin is a compelling modern family drama, threaded with folklore and building to an incredible, climactic ending. It's a story of wild landscapes, incomers, outsiders and changelings, and a meditation on the absence of women's voices in stories and history. And like a hyme to the sea, it is unpredictable, startling and beautiful.

My Review:-Luda Managan brings her teenage children Darcy is 16-years-old and  his sister Min is 14-years-old, they travel from Australia to the remote island of Seannay in Scotland. She hopes this is a new start for them all, after the death of her husband. The children didn't want to come, leave everything they know behind, so as well as being normal teenagers they have the death of their father and moving to the other side of the world to put up with. Luda starts to take photos and documents the effects of the climate change. Lude publishes some photos of a deceased young girl, which doesn't go down well with the local community. The locals do slowly begin to accepted them into the community, which is all that Luda wanted. Min and Darcy start to make friends. Then Theo comes along and everything changes, but not for the better...
I found this book could be a everyday story, they is so much going on in it that you find you're focusing on many things at the same time. We have grief, finding yourself, relationships building between family/people, climate change, witch hunts. I found this was an easy read and I wasn't expecting the ending...

My Review:-This is Book Three in the 'Dolly Novels.' and I've had the pleasure to review yet another great book by Dorothy Dunnett. Each book in the series can be read as a standalone. I love how this book starts 'Bifocal glasses are common.'   Sarah, Flo and Janey all knew each other from St Tizzy's, (St Theresa's). Sarah Cassells had a small business in catering, but that didn't mean she had money. When Sarah get's the news that her father, has committed suicide, she knew that it wasn't true. How was she going to find the truth? Sarah had to get to Ibiza and start to investigate what really happened to her father. Sarah wasn't short of a few men wanting to get to know her, Coco a Poet, Tony Lloyd (Gilbert's father), Gilbert Lloyd her friend Janey's brother (who she had a crush on at school), Austin a gallery owner, Clem Sainsbury, and of course Johnson Johnson with Dolly. Sarah's investigation wasn't as simple or like any other, lets just say a lot of parties, clubs, dark alley's and beaches. It's up to Johnson to help find out wants went on and who is who. Where ever there's a murder Johnson Johnson, along with Dolly is on the scene.  I love the description of Ibiza, and some some of the sayings 'like see-through gloves, and champagne stoppers and high heels with trousers.'  I'm not saying any more as I might say to much. All I will say is watch your eye on one of the men that I've mentioned.

My Review:-Not sure what I was expecting, as I was going by what the cover was saying to me, which was adventure, group of friends and something dark, I wasn't wrong. It was all that and a lot more. Five senses, Sight, Sound, Smell, touch and taste a gift five friends find they each have. They live in a small town, Danville with people they love and care about, but a dark force is also there and it's up to them to do what they can to save both mankind and themselves. Will they manage to come together as one and over come the dark force? Nothing is what it seem and there must learn to use they gift. The twists will have to wanting more, but keep your ears and eyes open as there are some you won't see coming. I loved both the plot and the writing style, the author knew what he was doing when they wrote this. I have ordered the book as, I want to read it myself as it always has a different feel from listening to someone reading it to you. Anyone that loves Action, Adventure, Mystery and Thrillers this is a book for you.

My Review:-Ian Maloney has the job to visit every lighthouse in Japan, built by
Scotsman Richard Henry Brunton during the modernization period of the Meiji Era in Japan. Ian Maloney travelled with his wife all around Japan for the lighthouses. Maloney wasn't like. His memoir was very much unpublished. I did find this book very interesting, I enjoyed reading about the different places in Japan as well as hearing about Meiji Era. I have family in Japan and I have asked questions about different things, thanks to this book. There is also some humour in this book.

Duna is a strong main character that you can't help but love her. General Cathal is betrothed to Princess Laila. When Princess Leila goes missing, the kingdom of Nissa's army goes on the hunt for her and this includes Duna and Cathal, this isn't going to be as easy as you think. My Review:-There is so much to talk about and that's just the front cover. A lot of people don't see that cover as part of the story, but I feel like this is the start. Each page was bright in colour, along with part of the story. You don't need the words for younger child and there is plenty to talk about and make a story of your own.  My granddaughter read this book to me and we talked about what you can do if you are feeling a bit anxious or find it scary when out and about. Emily my granddaughter has ear defenders that she wears if it's to loud and it's really busy as they help. We found this book really helpful foe her. An easy read book for all ages, Emily is 9-years-old and loved it.
