My Review:-This is a true story, told by Melody Horrill. Melody Horrill grow Upon a violent and traumatic childhood. Melody’s father was a brutal, violent man, that took t out on her mother. When Melody went to university she was at her lowest she had ever been. Melody volunteered to help her tutor to monitor a pod of river dolphins in Pot River Adelaide. Jock one of the dolphin’s wasn’t as sociable as the others in his pod, he was a solitary dolphin, he had a damaged fin. It wasn’t long before Jock and Melody made a connection, this is where the story really begins. With the help from Jock, Melody soon started to face her demons and what had gone on in her childhood, facing her emotions. The bond that was made between Melody and Jock shows how much animals feel and help humans. I found this a beautiful story, how you can be at your lowest and still come through it, with the help from a friend.

Genre:-Historical Fiction
Pages:-544
Publisher:-The Book Guild
Blurb:-A historical fiction novel documenting a young woman's struggle against the backdrop of two key historical events-the Franco-Prussian War and the Paris Commune of 1870/71.
A back-against-the-wall survival story of a woman who faces a forced marriage, her child being taken, imprisonment, the indignities of selling her body, the freezing winter of 1870, starvation and the risk of spying.
Covers a time period infrequently covered in English-language fiction.
Burgundy, 1861
Christine 'Kiki' Vellay, the daughter of vineyard workers, is forced to marry an older man in exchange for a piece of land. He abuses her. Seduced by a young naval cadet she plots to run away. When her husband is killed during the attempt, she finds herself wrongly accused of his murder.
 Kiki is on the run.
On reaching Paris in disguise, Kiki discovers she is pregnant and takes on various jobs to survive. When her child is stolen from her, she begins a desperate attempt to find him. Her story takes her from imprisonment in the infamous Conciergerie, to a chateau in the Loire, back to Paris under siege-as a spy-during the Franco-Prussian war, culminating in a dramatic conclusion in the final bloody week of the Paris Commune.

My Review:- Christine Vellay (Kiki as she was known) was 15 year-old when her father decided to give her hand in marriage for the price of some land. The Vellays had worked the lands in Meursault, a small community in Burgundy, as labourers of the vineyards. Saturday, 27th July was the day Kiki became Madame Augustave Monnier. After the wedding, Kiki decided that the only way this marriage could work was with some rulers and she made this clear, but after time these rules were broken. After time Kiki gave birth to a baby boy, but this wasn’t going to work out the way a mother would expect for her and her child. I don’t do spoilers but I will say the ended wasn’t what I expected. This was a long book which I read over a few sittings, but I do think it worked well with this story. Christine (Kiki) was a strong woman, knowing what she wanted in life and did her best to do this .

My Review:- I loved the cover of this book, friends going to fly a kite, they are bright and colourful and would appeal to children.  The book begins with Faraday Bear and his friends seeing a big red kite in the toy shop window and they would love to get it, but they don't have enough money on there own. Faraday Bear suggest that if they put all the money together so they could buy it and share flying it. After buying the kite Felix's has the idea to go fly it on top of Woodland Peak Hill because it was a perfect day, as the trees were blowing. Off the friends went, Faraday Bear, Jack, Rex, Flint, Felix, Spike, Charmer, Chase and Mandy. Jack is flying the kite, everyone was watching, that's when the trouble starts as everyone wants to have a turn but some aren't going to wait, soon the kite is stuck in the tree. When Spike pulled the kite the branch tore through. Everyone it upset and starts to blame each other, and goes home. It's up to Faraday Bear to sort it out. The story shows how things can go wrong but with everyone talk and listening to each other, learning to share things, it can be sorted out and become friends again.  The illustration throughout the book of beautifully drawn and coloured. The Infertile Midwife

The Infertile Midwife: In Search of Motherhood
By Sophie Martin
Genre:-Memoir/Non Fiction
Pages:-288
Publisher:-Quadrille Publishing
Blurb:-An insightful, moving memoir, capturing life working as a midwife in a busy NHS hospital at the same time as dealing with experiences of infertility, IVF and loss.
As a young married couple, Sophie Martin and her husband spent years trying to conceive. They went through several rounds of IVF, at great expense, and even travelled overseas for treatment, never quite knowing whether they would one day have a family. Alongside this, Sophie was working hard at a job she loved: looking after expectant mothers and newborn babies as a midwife in a busy hospital, where the patients' daily new additions were a constant reminder of Sophie's own setbacks in pursuit of motherhood.
The Infertile Midwife is a deeply personal, moving account of chasing something that you want so desperately. It also offers a much-needed look at how society treats infertility-from the language we use to the small talk we make-and the ways in which we can all do more to make things better for hopeful parents. With great warmth and honesty, Sophie shares her experiences of the bursts of hope and moments of great loss, but also the humour, love and joy that can be found in even the darkest places.

The author has shown both side of having children or not, but has done it in a way that neither is right or wrong, which I found worked in this book. This is a topic that comes up so much in everyday life. You also find that the questions are also always asked...when you starting a family, why aren't you having children. I have seen this first hand, as my brother never wanted children growing uo he always said no children, but people still asked why. This is a quick read but a good one

Douglas was as much a thinker as he was a writer, and his artefacts reveal how the deep fascination with technology led to ideas which were far ahead of their time: a convention speech envisioning the modern smartphone, with all the information in the world living at our fingertips; sheets of notes predicting the advent of electronic books; journal entries from his forays into home computing-it is matter of legend that Douglas bought the very first Mac in the UK; musings on how the internet would disrupt the CD-Rom industry, among others.

Alongside details of his most celebrated works  are projects that never came to fruition, including the pilot for radio programme They'll Never Play That on the Radio and a space-inspired theme park ride.
Douglas's personal papers prove that the greatest ideas come from the fleeting thoughts that collide in our own imagination, and offer aa captivating insight into the mind of one of the twentieth century's greatest thinkers and most
After the Hitchhiker's Guide radio series aired in 1978, young art student Kevin Jon Davies sought out its little-known author Douglas Adams to record an early fanzine interview. My Review:- Growing up listening then watching Hitchhiker's Guide, this was a book that I was looking forward to and I have to say It didn't disappoint me. This has been a really interesting read, I've read it over a period of time, keep going back to it. I never knew that he wrote 3 episodes of Dr Who, I thought he had only wrote one, these are the things that you will find it this great book It's not a book that you have to read page by page, you can dip in and out, as well as flick through, which I did when I first received it.

My Review:-Norah Day and her Dad have to live in temporary accommodation at a Bed and Breakfast, but that means during the day they are not allowed to stay in. When Norah was on her own she goes to the park on her bike. Norah has been feeding some birds in a nest, but they have gone. She discovers that a boy in the rich houses has something to do with it. Adam's life might look great from the outside to people but not everything is always what it think. Norah and Adam become friends, and soon learn that they aren't that much different. I found this book was very close to how life is now, people struggling to eat, homeless, as well as illness and how people are affected in different ways. My granddaughter and I really enjoyed this book and talking about what she thought about it.

The Freedom Clause

The Freedom Clause
By Hannah Sloane
Genre:-Fiction
Pages:-352
Publisher:-Random House USA Inc
Blurb:-What happens if you find your true love too soon? Could one night off a year save your marriage-or destroy it? In this bold and sexy debut, a young couple discovers that a little freedom has surprising consequences.
"A delicious novel...Nora Ephron fans will delight in this debut,"-Amada Eyre Ward, New York Times bestselling author of The Jetsetters.
Dominic and Daphne met in their first week of college, and they've been happily married for three years. They love each other deeply but perhaps have become too comfortable, and their sex life isn't what anyone would call thrilling. So, on New Year's Day, Dominic blurts out a suggestion before it's fully worked out in his mind: what if they open up their marriage?
Daphne reluctantly agrees-with conditions. They can sleep with one other person, one night a year, and the agreement has a five-year expiration date. It's not a total free-for-all on their vows, but an amendment. They call it the Freedom Cause.
It isn't long before Daphne and Dominic find themselves-and their marriage-altered in unexpected ways. Embracing the spirit of the Clause, Daphne pushes herself to be more assertive in asking for what she wants. She begins chronicling her journey of self-discovery in an anonymous newsletter, sharing recipes inspired by her conquests, and soon realizes that one night off a year isn't a small change...it's a seismic one.
Eventually, Daphne and Dominic are reconsidering everything-each other, their relationship, and themselves. Can they survive the Freedom Clause? Do they even want to?

My Review:-Daphne and Dominic met during their time at college and marry young. Dominic feels like there is something missing in their sex life, without even thinking it out first, he blurts out his idea.  Daphne agrees but first they have to agree with somethings, One person, One night, Once a year and for five years, that's how the 'Freedom Clause' comes about. Could this really work or is this the end of their marriage? Things aren't going to go to be as simple as it sounds. We are taken on this journey with Daphne and Dominic, with a few unexpected things on the way. Would you consider the 'Freedom Clause' or is it a step to far?
I loved this book, even though it's not for everyone, it does make Daphne look at things differently.

My Review:-I had the pleasure of reading and reviewing 'The Poisoned Garden' and now been asked to review 'The Rhymer's Daughter', which is Book Two in the "Leopard's Bane." This can be read as a standalone as there is a small lap over from Book One for you to understand. Peglar is still on the run and trying to avoid his half-brother. Yalka is serving ale, after loosing everything in the fires in the River Settlements. Peglar decides to go to sea as it will be safer for him. Even though they are both going different ways, they both still have more heartache to come, just as they think yes, they are knocked down again. Phill Featherson has done it again, leaving me wanting more, this show's just how good of a writer he is. Can't wait for book Three. Just to let you know, keep a box of tissues near by.

My Review:-What can I say, this lovable pup Dash is helping again, this time with diabetes. This is one of the books that I wanted to review as my granddaughter is just starting her journey and I wanted to see if this would help us. The book begins with us meeting Dash and her handler Navya, along with Cricket and her handler, Tunde and Lumos and his handler Eun Ji. On floor two we meet Francisco, 10-years-old who has type 1 diabetes and staying in hospital until his blood sugars are within the right range. I loved how through Francisco we learn about diabetes and what it means to have it and how it can be treated. Dash meets many children that day in hospital. I love how Dash shows how injection are done, this was something my granddaughter wanted to know. The back of the book has a note from Francisco and Dash, we also meet Alicia. We found this a really helpful book and would be great for all children.

My Review:-We meet Lumos again, dealing with cuts and stitches. In this book we meet Kaia, a 10-year-old who has multiple scratches and scrapes covering her legs and her arm is also wrapped  in a towel with spots of blood showing through. Lumos is there it help Kaia along the way, even when Kaia has to go to x-ray, Lumos goes along with her and shows her how to get a x-ray by jumping onto the table to show her. Lumos also goes to Rehab to visit an old friend Sonali who is in a wheelchair. On returning back to see Kaia, she is looking worried as she has to have stitches, but as always Lumos is there to help and make it easier.
These books are a great idea for helping children of all ages, as well as some older people, making someone less worried is something that we all want and what better way than having a cute dog to help us.

The Fighter of Auschwitz

The Fighter of Auschwitz
By Eric Brouwer
Genre:-Biography/Non Fiction
Pages:-256
Publisher:-Cassell/Octopus Books
Blurb:-'He had the dream again last night...He taps the gloves of his unbeaten Polish opponent. There are rumours that the loser will be sent to the gas chamber.'
In 1943, the Dutch champion boxer, Lean Sanders, was sent to Auschwitz. His wife and children were put to death while he was sent 'to the left' with the others who were fit enough for labour. Recognised by an SS officer, he was earmarked for a !privileged! post in the kitchen in exchange for weekly boxing matches for the entertainment of the Nazi guards. From there, he enacted his resistance to their limitless cruelty.
With great risk and danger to his own life. Lean stole, concealed and smuggled food and clothing from SS nursing units for years to alleviate the  unbearable suffering of the prisoners in need. He also regularly supplied extra food to the Dutch women in Dr. Mengele's experiment, Block 10. To his fellow Jews in the camp, he acted as a rescuer, leader and role model, defending them even on their bitter death march to Dachau towards the end of the war.
A story of astonishing resilience and compassion, The Fighter of Auschwitz is a testament to the endurance of humanity in the face of extraordinary evil.

My Review:-The incredible true story of Leendert Josua Sanders, a professional Dutch boxer who boxed to help others survive. This is a book I knew was going to a hard read because of the genre, but one that I was looking forward to read. We are told the story of Leen before and after his time in Auschwitz. On 18th August 1942, Leen his wife, Selli and children, Jopie and David left home on Paviljoensgracht for the last time, but always having hope that one day they would return. On 14th January 1943 Leen walked through the gates to Auschwitz with the words "ARBEIT MACHT FREI" (Work sets you free) above the gates. After walking through those gates, he was sent to the left as he was healthy and fit and could work, unlike his family that were put to death. Working in the kitchen, Leen could hide food to give to others as well as other things. Leen knew he had to fight and win if it means someone doesn't go to the gas chamber. Boxing became more of a job for him, that brought helped himself as well as his 'organisation' (You will learn what his organisation means through reading the book). We learn the way Nazi's thought and how they invaded the Jewish community.  After the war Leen became an American citizen, but will never forget what he had to do or saw. His left arm bears his concentration camp number: 86764, something that holds a lot of memories.
I found this an emotional book but one that needs to be read. The back of the book holds a lot of information, Bibliography, Testimonies of Auschwitz survivors, Articles, Newpapers archives, Magazines and other sources.

Rising temperatures have caused fires that burned landmasses, and the ash from these fires block out the sun.
The resulting cold is extreme, like a nuclear winter, and was a mass extinction event for human beings the world over. Electricity grids, communications and services all failed. Societies collapsed. Humanity is reduced to small groups of survivors, scraping by however they can. Resources are scarce, and bands of survivors resort to violence to obtain enough food and fuel to survive.
A man and his family group have survived the cruel winter by hiding in a house in Surrey, but when a roaming gang starts to ravage the area, they are forced to run. As they flee to safety, the cohesion and tolerance that had kept them going for so long starts to fracture...

My Review:-Cold is a dystopian post-apocalyptic novel set in the near future. Al and the scientists got it completely wrong. Because of rising temperatures they have caused fires that burn landmasses, and the ash from these fires blocks the sun out. The survivors that remain on earth have to live with limited resources which isn't easy in the freezing weather. They can't trust anyone which makes life a lot harder. This is Jim Pearce's debut novel. Even though I found this a quick read, I did enjoy it.

My Review:-Being an only child, Tara was left to look after Mary, her mother. Mary is in a wheelchair after a car accident that also killed her father. With no friends and no one to talk to, Tara was shocked by the results of a DNA test, it shows that she has a sister, Cassie. Tara decided to contact Cassie, not know what to expect. Cassie isn't anything like Tara, she is homeless after drinking to much and ending up in hospital, which got her kicked out of the refuge she was in. After meeting for the first time and things not going to plan, Tara wanted to get to know her sister more and invited Cassie to come and live with her mother and herself. This is something Tara always wanted a sister, but is it a good idea to have Cassie living with them. In the book we learn about children in Ireland in the 1980s being taking from mothers and sold. It was a bit slow but I still enjoyed it, especially about the children being sold as it was something I didn't know about, but have looked into it now, thanks to the book.
