My Review:-This is Book Five in 'The Island ofAnimaux series.' We decided to read this book as one of our bedtime stories and we all enjoyed it. A place that no humans know about and it moves around the planet. We get to meet many characters, both old and new in this book. Aubrey turkey, Clifford the Platypus and Walli Hog. The stories are fun but also have meaning, the environment, love and loss. I found it a great way of helping children with emotions. I liked the idea of the map at the beginning along with two coordinates. The little pictures throughout the book adds to the stories. Emily enjoyed this book and found it easy to read.

My Review:-At sixteen-year-old Harriet Flynn is left to help her mother at the holiday village they ran with her father having to go away. Harriet needs to help with the reenactment of life back in the seventeenth century. After tripping over a gravestone the night before, Harriet and her friends wake in the morning with magical powers, but not sure why or how. Even though it was fun at first they soon learn it's going to be a lot harder than they think to sort out. Harriet only has day with the help of her friends to find the true key. Will this be to much for Harriet and her friends?
I really enjoyed this book, even though Hexed is aimed at young adults, I think it is suitable for any age. It was a quick and easy read. My fourteen-year-old granddaughter is now reading it.

My Review:-Annie's dream has always been to travel the world. When Annie married Peter the love of her life and became a mother she knew this wasn't going to happen, because Peter didn't want to travel.  Annie had Julian first, followed by Elsa, but her relationship with Elsa wasn't good, she wore gloves when she picked her, which wasn't that often, (I feel like she may have had PND). Everything was different when she had Kitty, she was beautiful and they would call her Doll Face, shortly after they after Leila, who looked like a crow, so they would call her Crow Face. Annie thinks there is something extra special about Kitty and Leila, and they are treated different to their brother and sister. I know some parents do treat their children different from each other, but how far would you go? I don't want to say much more, apart from you need to read this book.  I have to say I loved the cover and I think it fits the book well. It had me gripped from the start, even at times I wanted to put it down but there was always something that made me to keep on reading to the end. I will be looking for more books by Carly Holmes.

Through The Snow Globe

Through The Snow Globe - #DecktheShelves Christmas Book
By Annie Rains
Genre:-Feel Good Fiction
Publisher:-Canelo
Blurb:--It's a Wonderful life meets Groundhog Day in USA. Today bestselling author Annie Rains's new novel, as a woman dangerously close to losing it all receives an unexpected Christmas gift that prompts a surprising journey of self-discovery...and another chance at happiness.
Diana Merriman, a physical therapist, is probably the only person in the small town of Snow Haven, North Carolina, who isn't looking forward to Christmas. It's been three weeks since her fiance Linus was critically injured when a car hit him as he biked home from the toy store he owns and manages. Watching him open his eyes is the only gift she wants, but she can't help losing a little more hope every day.
But an unexpected visit from a friendly neighbour and finding a snow globe of Snow Haven-a gift Linus had hidden in the closet-the night before Christmas Eve changes things in ways Diana never would have imagined. Because on Christmas Eve Diana wakes up to find that it's not-Christmas Eve, that is. Instead, it's somehow December 4 all over again, the day Linus got hurt, and as mystified as Diana is, she immediately starts a plan to save her partner from his fate.
Nothing is that simple, of course. Instead of a single repeat of that day, Diana finds herself in an endless loop of December 4, experiencing every possible variation of events. Along the way, she uncovers startling truths about herself, her relationship, and even her career that illustrate the ways she's retreated from her life- and in the face of life's slights and outright blows, from her deepest feelings. Suddenly hope is second only to joy as Diana opens her heart of the people she loves in every way she can.

My Review:-Diana Merriman had it all, until that morning when her fiance, Linus was in a bike accident. With Christmas being the last thing on her mind, Diana comes across a present that Linus had hidden from her, a snow globe, but not just any snow globe, it was of Snow Haven where they lived. Diana has the chance to change everything when she wakes up and finds its December 4th again, the day of Linus's accident. What is she going to do? The ending wasn't what I expected but it was perfect for Diana. This is a easy to read and well wrote book, perfect for this time of the year. It did have a feel of Groundhog Day when the same day keeps repeating until you get it right. With the 4th December repeating itself I did think it gave Diana time to look at her life differently. The story reminds you that you never know what is round the corner, always tell your love  ones how much you love and care about them.

Young Ebenezer is a young boy that doesn't like to share, he wasn't a very nice and didn't care about anything. Grandfather Time takes Ebenezer to see children that are both caring and know how to share. There is something for everyone in this book, even a dog ghost called Miss Ruby Heart. There are children from different origins and different abilities which will appeal to all children. The story is a lovely rhyming story, with beautiful  illustration colourful and full of fun.

My Review:-My granddaughter Emily asked if she could read this book to me as our bedtime story. In this book we get to meet brother and sister Faith and Harris, Faith is the older sister. The old Oaktree isn't like any other old tree, this was 19, Primrose Gardens and a special tooth fairy called Pip lived here. As the children play in the garden around the old Oaktree.  Faith noticed something different about the tree, there was a door, but she had never noticed this before. Harris doesn't believe in fairies, but Faith did and she knew how to help her brother believe. They decided to write a letter to say 'Hi' and asked if a fairy lived there would there say 'Hi' back. It wasn't long before Harris started to believe in fairies and the letters became something special between Pip and the children. This is a beautiful book that is a easy read, but also a lovely picture book for younger children. There is plenty to talk about on each page, along with a magical feeling. Emily has her own fairy at Nana's house but hers isn't a tooth fairy, it's just a fairy that lives with the tooth mouse. Emily and her fairy leave letters for each other as well.

My Review:-A story set in dual timelines, 1964 and 2019, in Karachi, Pakistan. The story is told through the eyes of Rozeena. Three refugees, Rozeena, Zohair, Aalya and Haaris who is from a wealthy family are a group of friends, the story is based around them growing up and what becomes of them.   Even though they don't say anything to each other, Haaris and Rozeena, also Aalya and Zohair have feelings for each other but because of family beliefs nothing is said. After so many years being childhood friends, Haaris decides to plan a party for everyone, but something happens that changed the four friends forever. After studying for a medical career, Rozeena becomes a doctor. There is one thing that we hear so much about and that's the BIG SECRET, but you will have to wait before you find that out. The story does jump from one time line to another and at times it is a bit confusing but it didn't stop me reading to the end.

A fast-paced, tender and unflinching depiction of teenage friendship and resilience against the odds
Touches on the Windrush Scandal, climate crisis, looked-after children and child criminal exploitation
Suitable as a PSHE/English classroom resource and for discussions around Black History Month
Nicola Garrard has taught in secondary schools, with over 20 years first-hand experience working with young people
Donny and Zoe are back. This time they must get out of Calais before they both end up in jail. This isn't a holiday. This is a role-swapping, day trip to hell. With football.
Older, wiser and more confident, life is going well for Donny, 17. He's a former gang member who's escaped a brutal life of criminal exploitation. He and his best friend Zoe plan a day trip to France ahead of their sixth form exams. After a fun morning in Calais, they're about to return to the port when they see a boy, Amin, being attacked. Streetwise Donny chases the man off. Wanting to clothes, and Zoe drives Amin with Donny's and passport to the Eurotunnel terminal to take him to Folkstone.
After all, what could possibly go wrong?
All Donny has to do is lie low at the park until Zoe's return. But, lost in France and arrested as an 'illegal' migrant, he must rely on the help of unaccompanied teenage refugees, living rough in the dunes east of Calais to survive. Can Donny use his boat skills to cross the busiest shipping channel in the world and make it home in time?
As Nicola Garrard says: 'In 2014 I read a news article about the suffering of separated child refuges in Calais, just 21 miles from our coast. I started to collect donations of food and clothing with the help of other parents. I filled my small campervan and took these essentials to Calais a number of times. There, I volunteered with a grassroots French refugee charity. On one occasion, I met a small thirteen-year-old Eritrean girl in Calais who begged me to take her to England where she had family. Fearing for her safety, I desperately wanted to help. But I didn't agree to take her. People-smuggling is against the law: I might have lost my career, been fined, and sent to prison. It was the right decision. But after we lost touch, I was left with the 'what if' of her request.

My Review:- In this story we travel with Donny and Zoe on a day trip to France, but it's not going to be like any other day trip. After helping someone out, Donny is left behind in France, he must prove who he is, as well as find a way home. With help from refugees Donny must do what he can to stay safe, even with many obstacles that are in front him. The loved both old and new characters.  The author has put so much into this story that it feels true. Refugees are at the heart of the news, we've all seen and read about boats being full trying to cross the channel.

My Review:-When an American professor finds some diaries from the past, he feels it's his job to look at them in more detail. The diaries were those that John Ledbury had wrote. It's not long before the professor finds some of the cases are unsolved. He decides to look into the cases in more detail, but to do that he must look back in time. The Counterfeit Detective is a dual timeline story.  I feel we have a mixture of fact and fiction, sometimes the two are weaved so close together you're not sure which is which. The way the story is wrote shows just how good of a writer Simpson Grears is.

My Review:-Caitlin Davies takes us on a journey through the years, from 1850s to the present day, looking at 'Female Private Investigators.'  We learn about REAL PIs, the ones that have been forgotten, in the past, but have paved the way for female PIs today. Caitlin has done a lot of research and has taken the time to explain about the crimes both fact and fiction in this book, looking back at the history, why and how women became PIs.  Caitlin even took the time to get the qualification in 'Private Investigation.'  Caitlin has taken the time to speak to PIs, as well as working a long side them. Female PIs are often seen on TV but not spoken much about in the real world, where I think if it was spoken about more women would look at a career in PI. I feel like I have learnt so much from reading this book.

The Lost Supper

The Lost Supper: Searching For The Future of Food in the Flavours of the Past
By Taras Grescoe
Genre:-History of Food/Non Fiction
Pages:-312
Publisher:-Greystone Books
Blurb:-In the tradition of Michael Pollan, Anthony Bourdain, and Mark Bittman, "a surprising, flavorsome tour of ancient cuisines" (kirkus ☆)-from Neolithic bread to ancient Roman fish sauce-and why reviving the foods of the past is the key to saving the future.
Many of us are worried (or at least we should be) about the impacts of globalization, pollution, and biotechnology on our diets. Whether it's monoculture crops, hormone-fed beef, or high-fructose corn syrup, industrially-produced foods have troubling consequences for us and the planet. But as culinary diversity diminishes, many people are looking to a surprising place to safeguard the future: into the past.
The Lost Supper explores an idea that is quickly spreading among restaurateurs, food producers, scientists, and gastronomes around the world: that the key to healthy and sustainable eating lies not in looking forward, but in looking back to the foods that lave sustained us through our half-million-year existence as a species.
Acclaimed author Taras Grescoe introduces readers to the surprising and forgotten flavors whose revival is captivating food-lovers around the world: ancient sourdough bread last baked by Egyptain pharaohs; raw-milk farmhouse cheese from critically endangered British dairy cattle; ham from Spanish pata negra pigs that have been foraging on acorns on a secluded island since before the United States was a nation; and olive ol from wild olive trees uniquely capable of resisting quickly evolving pests and modern pathogens.
From Ancient Roman fish sauce to Aztec caviar to the long-thought-extinct sliphium, The Lost Supper is a deep dive into the latest frontier of global gastronomy-the archaeology of taste. Through vivid writing, history, and first-hand culinary experience, Grescoe sets out a provocative case: in order to save these foods, he argues, we've got to eat them.

My Review:-In this book 'The Lost Supper' we look back at what is food, food that has sustained us through half-million-years. Taras Grescoe takes us with him on a journey to discover why we have lost so many of our foods. Traveling around the world seeking out food that once was part of our diet, and do they still exist. Taras has conversations with growers, archaeologists, chefs, farmers and anyone that harvest food. I found this book an interesting read, as well as learning about food and how it as lasted so long. The back of the book has a 'Selected Bibliography' and a place for notes. There are a lot of food that I would try, but I have to say I'll give anything fish, especially fish sauce a big miss. Is there food that you once had growing up, but now you don't hear or see it?

My Review:-I've never read anything by Denzil Meyrick, but the blurb is what made me want to give it a read and I glad I did. Inspector Frank Grasby is sent to investigate some thefts at Elderby, but things soon get a lot harder when a body  is found in the chimney of Holly House. Not long later a second body is found. My Review:-Joe-Nathan has always had the guidance from his mother, as well as his own gut instinct, but all that is about to change when he leaves his own comfort zone.  With the help from those around him, Joe-Nathan opens the door to things he would never thought of doing before. His mother knows there is many things that he needs to learn and because of that she keeps writing a book full with advice and help with things he will come across or even might need. The story shows kindness, compassion, along with a bit of humour. There are parts that feel real, especially having to step out of our comfort zone and not knowing what might happen if we doing. The story was a bit slow at the beginning, but that doesn't last long, so keep reading

Ameles/Currents of Unmindfulness
By R.M. Francis
Genre:-Horror Short Stories/Contemporary Horror
Pages:-156
Publisher:-PoeGirl Publishing
Blurb:-In Greek Mythology, those who drank from the underworld river, Ameles Potamos, would suffer inexplicable disorientation. They would be left adrift, out of time, out of place, sometimes out of their minds.
The tales in Ameles/Currents of Unmindfulness by R.M. Francis, his debut collection, range from the quietly unsettling to weird and full=on horror.
R.M. Francis plays around with genre conventions and forms to deliver a flood of dark disturbing imagery that will stay with you in the darkest recesses of your mind.

My Review:-I wasn't sure what to except from this book, as I haven't read many horror anthologies and nothing by R.M. Francis. This is a book of short stories but ones that I have enjoyed read, even if some felt creeping and weird. I must say 'Lottie' was one that I found a bit weird and how easy it was to picture the story in my head. I love the writing style of the author, didn't give you everything but enough to make you think. `I felt like I wanted to read more. I will be looking for more from the author.

My Review:-When I read the blurb for this book, I knew it was one that would interest me. Living in Newcastle Upon Tyne, I've heard and read the stories about the witch trials, how fifteen women and a man were hung in Newcastle, even done a ghost haunt on the subject.  This is Book Three in 'The Widdershins Trilogy,' I haven't read the other two books but I didn't think I had missed anything. England 1673. Rose Driver has had a troubled past and hopes that the new vicar would be different. The village was in the middle of puritan fever, and everyone was looking at Rose, which wasn't something new, after all her family were put to death by John Sharpe, a witchfinder. Rose, Tilly and Tommy Green would play at Witch Cottage, Meg Wetherby use to live there. Meg's cottage was a place that would mean more to Rose as she got older. I don't want to spoil anything for you so will let you read the rest. This is a book that I've really enjoyed and will be reading Books one and two.

My Review:-I love a Christmas story, especially at this time of the year and this didn't disappoint. Curling up with my hot chocolate, added to the Christmas feeling. Margi is sixty-four-year-old and has had enough of everything Christmas, as well as the lack of eligible men. Margi is persuaded to try some dating apps online. Will this be her last hope for happiness? Margi's not sure if this is going to be the last year of 'The annual Wheaton gingerbread exhibit.) The gingerbread village was her mother's legacy which has been the village tradition for many years.
I loved all the character both young and old. It was nice to see that Kiley had made the older character the vocal point of the book. It shows that just because you're getting older you can still be attractive and have a life. Margi is struggling with her feelings, like so many people do once they start getting older.
A heart warming story.
