Kalmann and the Sleeping Mountain

Kalmann and the Sleeping Mountain
By Joachim B. Schmidt
Translated By:-Jamie Lee Searle
Genre:-Crime Fiction/Nordic Crime/Translated Fiction
Pages:-288
Publisher:-Bitter Lemon Press
Blurb:-A Nordic crime thriller with a difference. No gratuitous violence, no revenge porn, but a lightly plotted thriller that is chock full of humour. It is set in Washington DC and northern Iceland, both highly exotic locations.
An Endearing Protagonist: Our mentally challenges hero, described with empathy and psychological tact, is faced with two murders and the threat of more to come.
A Prize-Winner. Joachim B. Schmidt received the Crime Cologne Award for the first Kalmann and the novel is shortlisted for the 2023 SpecSavers Debut Crime Award. As the jury in Cologne put it: "With Kalmann, the award goes to a classic picaresque novel cloaked in crime with an oddball protagonist at its heart. Schmidt succeeds brilliantly with the childlike, naive narrative technique of his protagonist.
Kalmann is back! But he's already in trouble; in an interrogation room at the FBI headquarters in Washington, no less. All he wanted to do was visit his American father, but the loveable sheriff of Raufarhofn got himself mixed up in the January 2021 Capitol riots.
Thanks to sympathetic FBI agent Dakota Leen, he's soon on a plane home, But not before she informs him that his grandfather was on a blacklist, suspected of spying for the Russians during the Cold War. Back in Iceland, there's a murder and one heck of a mystery to unravel. And what role does a mysterious mountain play in all this? Somehow Kalmann never loses heart. There's no need to worry; he has everything under control

My Review:-Kalmann's father has invited him to America for a visit. Even though he enjoyed his time in America, things didn't go to plan and didn't end the way he thought it would. Kalmannends up getting mixed up in the storming of the Capitol on 6th January 2021 and ends up in trouble with the FBI. With the help from a FBI agent, Dakota Leen, he's deported from the USA back to Iceland. But there's one thing he's told from Dakota before he leaves.. his grandfather was on the blacklist, they thought he was spying for Russians during the Cold War. Back home Kalmann wonders if his grandfather dying, was really a murder. It's up to Kalmann to dig deeper into his grandfather dying, but in the meantime there has been another murder...
Kalmann is a loveable character, you can't help but like him. The book has many interesting characters that will you meet along the way. This book has a bit of everything mystery, crime, murder, humour and a few twists. Even though I didn't read the first book, I didn't feel like I missed anything.

My Review:-I think this book would be a great help and understanding to the menopause for anyone. The book is set out into chapters, from explaining What Is the Menopause? Perceptions, Talking, Expectations, Lifestyle, Moods, Night and Day, Intimacy and Second Phase.
Throughout the book we are told Kate's Perceptions and Action Plan, also Neil's Perceptions and Action Plan. I found the book interesting to read, some of the symptoms I didn't even know were linked...Problems with Eyesight and Tinnitus. I did think the part about talking to your partner, after all they are going through it as well, just in a different way. As Kate has been through the menopause she could share her experiences with us, as well as Neil's experiences.
I've been lucky as I'm now 58 years old and never went through anything.

Yet he still manages to get a job offer from one of the oldest and most respected finance house, Blounts. But not everything is what it seems as Seb starts to find out. My Review:-When Funke's mother dies she is sent to England from Nigeria. Nigeria is a place she loves and her life is or she thought. Being sent to England is a big culture change. There is nothing she likes, apart from her cousin Liv. Liv is a free-spirit and has always wanted to break free from the family, who are both cold and distant. Liv takes Funke under her wing and it's not long before they become best friends. But not everything can always stay the same. Just as Funke was going to go to medical school, there is word that her father is ill and she must return back to Nigeria to care for him. But it's not what Funke expects when she arrives back in Nigeria. This has been an enjoyable read, that I read in two sittings

My Review:-We have a few books wrote by Fiona and we enjoy reading them, so when we saw this one we just had to read it. My granddaughter Emily read this book to myself and her younger cousin.
Felix is a boy that has a dream of one day being a vet, he just loves animals. After asking for a dragon and then a dinosaur he would name Joe, his parents decide to take him to the animal shelter to find a pet. What do you think Felix will pick for a pet, a cat, a dog or maybe something else? Sorry but you will have to read it yourself to find out what Felix picks.
The illustrations are big and colourful that will appeal to young children. We loved how it is a rhyming book as well as a picture book. There is so much throughout the book that you can talk about with your child. Fiona has shown that even at a young age children still have dreams and this is a great way to talk about them. Emily and her younger cousin loved the book and trying to guess what Felix was going to pick as a pet. 5***** from the girls

The Tyranny of Flies

The Tyranny of Flies
By Elaine Vilar Madruga
Genre:-Horror Parody & Satire/Contemporary Horror/Humour/Translated Fiction
Pages:-256
Translated By:-Kevin GerryDunn
Publisher:-HarperVia
Blurb:-In this provocative, darkly funny, and unique novel-a mix of Lord of the Flies and The Royal Tenenbaums-a dictator's former right-hand man becomes housebound and a family power struggle erupts.
Growing up on a Cuba-esque Caribbean island, Casandra, Calia, and Caleb endure life under two tyrannies; that of their parents, and the Island's authoritarian dictator, Pop-Pop Mustache, Papa was the dictator's former right-hand man. Now. he's political pariah and an ugly parody of a tyrant, treating his home as a nation which he rules with an iron fist. As for Mom, his wife and hateful second in command, she rules from the mind. Obsessed with armchair psychoanalysis, she spends her days reading self-help books and seeks to diagnose the kids, and perhaps even herself.
But within these walls, a rebellion is fomenting. Casandra, a cynical, self-important teenager with the most unlikely of attractions, recruits Caleb, meek yet gifted with a deadly touch, to join her in an insurrection against their father's arbitrary totalitarianism. Meanwhile, Calia, the silent, youngest sibling who just wants to be left alone to draw animals, may be in league with the flies-whose swarm in and around the house grows larger as Papa's violence increases.
Equal parts Greek tragedy and horror, with a touch of J.D. Salinger and Luis Bunuel, The Tyranny of Flies is a biting and wholly original subversive and the frightening and indelible links between patriarchy, military, and family.

My Review:-Casandra, Calia and Caleb are siblings that have grown up on a Cuba-esque Caribbean island. To the siblings they are ruled by their parents, both dictators in their own way. Papa, once the right-hand man to Pop Pop Mustache, but now house bond, he runs his family with an iron fist. Their Mom, who is just as bad but in a mindful way. Two of the siblings, Casandra and Caleb rebel against everything and everyone, especially their father. Unlike Calia, who is happy being alone watching from the side line, quiet yet getting more powerful as the time goes.
I'm not really sure how I feel about this book, It's a book I feel needs to be read by yourself to understand fully. It's funny but also dark in parts. It's a book of dictatorship, violence, family. I have to say I did like the author's writing style, strange but yet enjoyable.

My Review:-This is Book Two in 'Apokeri Bay Series' I have had the pleasure of reading and reviewing book one 'Apokeri Bay.' You can read this book as  standalone, but personally I would recommend reading book one first, you won't be disappointed. The scene is set ten years on from book one. Anna is still doing her best to make sure that her husband and daughter are always safe, but it's not getting any easier, especially now her daughter is at school. Could this be the point were everything is about to change? Will she lose everything?
There are a lot more twists and turns within this storyline. I love how Jackie manages to make you think that you are on the Greek island along with Anna, by her descriptive writing. We get to meet some interesting new characters, including a mafia boss, a con artist, secret lover, a baby girl and her mother. The book is filled with betrayal, crime, secrets, forgiveness and more, you won't be disappointed. It's a fast pace and enjoyable read, one to pop in you bag

Our Daily War

Our Daily War
By Andrey Kurkov
Genre:-Russian Historical Biographies
Pages:-336
Blurb:-"For centuries, attempts have been made to force Ukrainians to forget their native language, to stop singing Ukrainian songs and to abandon their history. For almost 400 year, Russia has been fighting against Ukrainian identity."
Ten years on from the annexation of Crimea, Two years on from Russia's all-out invasion of Ukraine, the Ukrainian people continue to fight back. In the second volume of his war diaries, Andrey Kurkov gives a fresh perspective on a people for whom resistance and solidarity have become a matter of survival.
Our Daily War is a chronological record of the heterogeneous mix that comprises Ukrainian life and thought in the teeth of Russian aggression, from the constant stress of air raids, the deportation of citizens from the occupied regions and the whispers of governmental corruption to Christmas celebrations, crowdfunding and the recipe for a "trench candle".
Kurkov's human's-eye view on the war in Ukraine is by turns bitingly satirical, tragic, humorous and heartfelt. It is also, in the manner of Pepys, an invaluable insight into the history, politics and culture of Ukraine. Our Daily War is the ideal primer for anyone who would like to know what life is like in that country today.
"Audrey Kurkov is one of the most articulate ambassadors to the West for the situation in his homeland." Sam Leith, Spectator
"Immediate and important...From the grim incredulity at Russians massing on the border to the displacement of millions of people, this is an insider's account of how an ordinary life became extraordinary. It is also about survival, hope and humanity," Helen Davies, The Times

My Review:-This is a book filled with some much, some I knew but other parts I didn't. Within this book you will read about Ukrainian history culture and how people look at them. For many years there has been attempts to force Ukrainians to forget their native language, including the songs that they have been singing and been past down through family to family. As well as the past it also looks at the present, Russian invasion of Crimean in 2014 to life how it is now for the Ukraine since 2022 and Putin.
I read the book over a few days, and I have to say it is emotional in parts, especially how they are treating the POW, but Putin has lied and convinced so many people/soldiers that the Ukrainians will treat them badly.
There is so much in this book that you have to read it yourself to appreciate just how much work  and detail Kurkov has put into it.

My Review:-This is Book Two in 'Detective Christine Dane Thrillers'. Liam Rafferty witnessed the murder of his fifteen-year-old brother, Martin when he was eleven-year-old. He always said someone had to pay for it at any cost. Now he's older and he still thinks the same, but will he go through with it?
It's up to Mick McAuthur, the Republican movement's intelligence chief to stop anything happening, but he knows it's not going to be that easy. I don't want to say much about the book as you have to read to see just how deep it will take you into the story.
The book is set in the 80's, which at the time Britain and Ireland didn't have a good relationship. The book shows just how much the British Police and Army was hated, especially by the IRA. Especially for what we saw and heard through television, the press and radio.  Having seen first hand through the British army, I found the author Simon Dinsdale doing an excellent job with describing just how life was and seen by so many people. The plot along with the characters worked really well together. It was fast pace and I do hope that Simon has more to come for us.

Diesel would howl when he was going on a new adventure to let his friends know. Diesel finds a crystal that has magic powers. When Diesel hears that some other dogs have got lost, it's up to him to find them. The book was easy to read and I enjoyed the story. The pictures are really beautiful with colours that show the magic in the story. I'm looking forward to see what Diesel's next adventure is going to be. 5 stars from Emily and myself.

My Review:-Helen Cartwright spend six decades in Australia, and at the age of 83-years-old, she has returned to her childhood village in England. Now a widow she keeps herself to herself and never bothers anyone. Everyday  is the same, cups of tea in front of the telly, toast and memories of her dead son and husband. The day she noticed that the discarded fish tank the her neighbours had put out, is the day everything changes. Thanks to a little mouse that Helen named 'Sipsworth.' Helen started to go out, the library for books on mouse care, the store for a new home for the mouse and even the hospital because Sipsworth falls ill. Its not long after that the people start to notice Helen and want to help her. This is a lovely story of friendship and love, when you think there is nothing else left for you.

My Review:-Lauren Sunshine is a marine archaeologist working on a shipwreck off the Dorset Coast, Sea Glass Cove. When Lauren finds a chess set with three pieces missing, she sets about trying to find the missing pieces. Philippa Silver, Phil to the people in Sea Glass Cove is trying to keep the local museum open and is hoping that the find from the shipwreck will do just that. The People Councillors are trying to shut the museum down, but no one knows why. As Lauren starts to make friends in the town, she especially wants to help Phil and tries to help with the museum with the items they have found. It was the only thing that was keeping her here, that was until she meets Ollie, Phil's brother. The story is full of mystery, secrets, romance and more. This is a great book to pop in your bag and find the perfect place by the sea or the pool to read.

My Review:- This is Book Six in the 'DCI Greg Geldard' series. I've loved the other books in the series, so I was looking forward to see what DCI Geldard was getting up to next. The book starts in 2020, Covid pandemic and restrictions are high on the list. Just as DCI Greg Geldard was trying to ask DS Chris Mathews, they are called into work as there is a leak, but who and why? This isn't going to be easy with everything that's happening in the world. DCI Geldard is asked if his team and himself can find out where the leak is, either at the station or with the Protection Team. It needs sorted out quickly, but only having limit staff at the station means everyone has to work that bit harder. When people start going missing, DCI Geldard starts to think is this linked to the leak, but surely not who they are asked to look into a bit deeper. DC Mathews is also hoping to get a new posting which will make life a bit easier with work. I'm not saying anything more, it's up to you to read and find out. I love everything about Heather's books, she never disappointed yet. Heather's writing style pulls you into the story making you want to read more and having you guessing till the end. I can't wait to see what she has installed for her next book

My Review:-Even when Luisa finds out about her husband Mark is being unfaithful to her, she was still willing to try and save their marriage. Deciding to go on holiday together, the couple headed to Dubrovnik in the hope this was going to turn out either one way or another. Luka wasn't just a hotel worker, he was a kind person that got on and also help others. It wasn't long before Luisa met Luka and she was surprised that she started to have feelings for him. Did this mean she was ready to finish her marriage to Mark? You will have to read that for yourself, no spoilers.
I found this an easy read with character that I could relate to very easily. The writing style that Jayne has, made it feel like I was with the characters, watching on to see what was going to happen next. This is a great book for the summer.

Jumping Hurdles

Jumping Hurdles
By Sarah Surgey
Genre:-Children's Fiction
Pages:-38
Publisher:-HB Publishing House
Blurb:-Bea is a determined and resourceful 7-year-old girl. She has just been diagnosed with Dyspraxia, which she still doesn't quite understand yet. What she does know is that sometimes things feel a little harder for her to do, unlike her friends. Bea's been told she's a "little clumsy", so sports day might be more challenging than she first thought. But through her determination and willpower, Bea realises that Dyspraxia hasn't replaced her other strengths. She can still reach the end of the race; she needs to use her other qualities.
Jumping Hurdles is an uplifting picture book that highlights one girl's reality of having a diagnosis. A beautiful SEL book that promotes positivity for children with Dyspraxia whilst teaching empathy and understanding for those who don't.

My Review:-My granddaughter and I decided to read this book as one of her bedtime stories. First thing I would like to say is how much I love that it shows awareness around disability. I worked with children with disabilities before becoming disabled myself and I found that there isn't many books/stories around people with disabilities. Sarah has brought awareness around one disability that isn't highlighted enough.
Bea is like any other 7-year-old girl, apart from she has Dyspraxia, and is trying to understand it a bit more. The day of her sports day is that day she knows she will have to use her skills and qualities she has learnt, because nothing is going to stop her getting to the finish line.
After reading the book, my granddaughter and I talked about children with disabilities. At my granddaughters school there are children with disabilities and learning levels, which means that the children all mix together and don't see the disabilities, they only see children that don't find things as easier as others and help them to over come that.
I would highly recommend this book to other parents/grandparents and teachers to help children to understand more about what it's like to be disabled but it doesn't have to stop  you doing things you love

Breaking Eggshells

Breaking Eggshells
By Liv Andrews
Genre:-Women's Fiction/Family Drama/Romance
Pages:-305
Publisher:-Words on Toast
Blurb:-Amanda has been walking on eggshells all her life.
Aunt Julia runs away at the very thought of them.
Sister Maddy breaks whatever she wants. (Eggshells? What eggshells?)
When Amanda's life falls apart, she realises that she has been too accommodating of everyone around her; pressured into living a life she never really wanted. She's been treading water and is only just keeping her head above the waves. Losing her sense of self, discovering a family secret and realising that they are all dancing to a very different tune means that starting over and trying to be the person she should have been is not easy.
So when an opportunity beckons, should she go to the safety of the shallows or take the risk and dive right in at the deep end?
Set in a riverside village in the UK (fictional) and partly in The Bahamas
Triggers: The story incorporates infidelity, suicide and sudden unexpected death (the last two of which, though obviously significant events, are not overly dwelt on).

My Review:-Amanda has always accommodated everyone, rather than have the life she always wanted. She put herself second to everyone else around her.  Amanda wants to start her life again but that means coming to terms with the past, as well as her cheating husband.
The story is told from multiple POV, which you'll find interesting, brings the story together, along with drama, and secrets which I think we all could relate to some way or another. I found the story heartwarming and inspiring. No matter how far you go in life, you can also find your way back, even if it does take years to do so. Never give up.

With her best friends, Em and Lucy, the three of them set of to Paris, after all Nancy needs to know the reason for the letter. My Review:-This is Book Two in 'The Forged and The Fallen' series. This book can be read as a standalone. I enjoyed the first book in the series 'Through Blood and Dragons' and was looking forward to this one to see what Cyran's has insulted for us. The story is told by different POV, which gives the book more depth and a great picture building for the story. The characters are well developed, some you will like more than others, such as Cyran and Jaslin, unlike Sirra.
The story is full of everything you want from a book, battles, magic. action, drama and best of all a variety of dragons. This is a must for anyone that loves fantasy, magic and dragons. The artwork on the cover is fabulous. I can't wait to see what R.M. Schultz has instore for us next.

Mt Review:-This is the first book I've read from the 'Terrible True Tales' by Terry Deary, also the author of 'Horrible Histories' With 'Terrible True Tales: Egyptians you're not just getting one book but four. We have stories about building pyramids, Tutankhamen's tomb and grave robbers, mummies and buried treasure. Each story is shorter than if you had each story on it's own, which makes it more appealing to children that don't like reading a lot.
My daughter has always loved anything Egyptians from the age of 5-year-old, so I asked my daughter to give this book a read and this is what she had to say...I use to watch Horrible Histories as a child and have always loved history but I was especially obsessed with ancient Egypt. This is a book that all ages will find entertaining. It is brilliant with mixing fact and fiction, the first story-The Gold in the Grave is proof of that it also happened to be my favourite of the four stories, with The Plot on the Pyramid a close second. The activities throughout the book will be great for both parents/teachers and children. I'm going to have a look at the Greek Tales next. 5*****
