The Funeral Cryer

The Funeral Cryer
By Wenyan Lu
Genre:- Contemporary Fiction/Humour
Pages:-384
Publisher:-Allen & Unwin
Blurb:-An Yu's Braised Pork meets Flaubert's Madame Bovary in this unforgettable, tragi-comic tale of one woman's mid-life re-awakening in contemporary rural China.
The Funeral Cryer long ago accepted the mundane realities of her life: avoided by fellow villagers because of the stigma attached to her job as a professional mourner and under-appreciated by The Husband, whose fecklessness has pushed the couple close to the brink of break-up. But just when things couldn't be bleaker, The Funeral Cryer takes a leap of faith-and in so doing things start to take a surprising turn for the better...
Dark, moving, and wry, The Funeral Cryer is both an illuminating depiction of a 'left behind' society and proof that it's never too late to change your life.

My Review:-The title is what made me decide to read this book. I have to say the first thing I noticed about this book was nobody had a name, it was The Husband, The Daughter, The Barbar, which was weird.
Avoided by people in her village because of her job and a husband that didn't appreciate her. I didn't like the husband, he didn't work but made sure he took the money she made from a job that he didn't want her to do. What did he do with the money he said he was putting in the bank? We are told about the day to day life she had when not working. Her job as the Funeral Cryer isn't for everyone, but it is well paid, even getting extra for making people cry. She is told things that wouldn't normally be talked about but because of her being the Funeral Cryer people felt they could talk to her. I did like how when she goes to the Barbars for her hair, she would have a conversation about her husband (the chatting is something that is very popular in hair dresser in the UK).
